Lone Star Beef Jerky

About Lone Star Beef Jerky

The Shobert family has been in the meat business for three generations. It all started when LL Shobert got into the wholesale meat market business in 1959. Soon, his son Don Shobert joined him while raising his young family in the 1960’s in Lubbock, Texas.

Don and LL toiled away, processing and selling meats and working hard. As Don was raising his family, his son Bubba showed a unique early talent (at age 8) for racing motorcycles. Knowing that his soon could make a good living with motorcycles (if he made it to the top), Don decided to sell out to his father and take his kid on the road.

They hit the circuit, traveled the country and never looked back. However, Don Shobert stayed close to his meat business, and kept tabs on what was happening. During the racing off seasons, he would smoke beef jerky for his friends and distribute it at all he races he attended. Selling this product helped him to off-set his travel expenses, but he also would give it away to his close friends and family as a special treat.

Soon, Don Shobert’s jerky was a popular pit treat at any AMA even. After getting Bubba going in the right direction (the kid turned pro at age 16). Don formally incorporated Lone Star Beef Jerky in 1980. At that point, his business was mostly mail order and local sales, and it was more for fun.

Meanwhile, his son Bubba was moving up the racing ladder and would go on to have some strong success. Through his race winnings, Bubba was able to become part owner of the company. However, he relocated to Northern California (Monterey) in the mid 1980’s and took a leave of absence in order to follow the racing dream. At that time, Northern California was considered the center of activity for dirt track and road racing in America, and Bubba wanted to be part of the scene.

Soon, the kid was in the prime of his career, and the years of sacrifice paid off. Bubba Shobert was able to win the AMA Grand National Championship in 1985, 1986 and 1987. He also won the Camel Pro Championship in 1985, 1986, 1987 and 1988, as well as the AMA Superbike Championship in 1988. In 1989 Bubba again took a step forward and moved on to race in the world championship, which was the pinnacle and most prestigious global motorcycle racing championship that a racer could enter.

However, after only 3 races, Bubba had a career ending crash at Laguna Seca Raceway in Monterey California. The crash was devastating to the Shobert family. After months of rehab, Bubba accepted that he was not going to be able to race again at the level he enjoyed, and thus hung up his Bell Helmet-content to have won multiple AMA national championships.

Bubba quickly moved on, and married his girlfriend Tara Sumners in 1991. They soon started a family and have two sons. In 1997 they relocated back to Lubbock Texas.

Don Shobert continued to run his jerky business, and slowly earned a reputation for having some of the best beef jerky in Texas. Once Bubba moved home, he joined his father at Lone Star. The two of them slowly evolved the historical business into a schedule whereby they were only open for hunting season, Thanksgiving and Christmas, satisfying many customers, friends and families.

After the 2009-2010 season Don Shobert decided to retire, and he handed the reins over to his son Bubba, the multi time AMA Grand National Champion and Honda legend. Bubba is now taking the lead with a quality reputation. Most importantly, Bubba is retaining the Shobert family history, and intends to keep it moving forward, just like his father and grandfather before him.
